How Often Should You Change Your Water Filter?

A water filter only works as well as its media. Over time, a filter fills up with the contaminants it removes, and performance drops. Here is how often to replace each USA Filtration filter, plus the signs that it is time for a change.

Shower filter (USA-75): about every 6 months

The USA-75 Shower Head Water Filter treats up to 7,500 gallons, which is about 6 months for most households. When it is time, swap in a USA-75R replacement cartridge.

Under sink filter (USA-100): up to 25,000 gallons

The USA-100 Under Sink Water Filter has a 25,000-gallon capacity, and its bacteriostatic GAC/KDF media prevents bacteria growth for 36 months. Replace it when you reach its capacity or at 36 months, whichever comes first.

Whole house system (USA-300): up to 75,000 gallons

The USA-300 Whole House Water Filter System processes up to 75,000 gallons. When it is used up, replace the tank with the USA-300R replacement tank. A sediment pre-filter catches sediment before it reaches the main tank.

Countertop and ice maker filters

For your USA-50 countertop filter or USA-25 ice maker filter, check the product page for its rated capacity and keep track of the install date so you know when it is due.

Signs it is time to replace your filter

  • Your water starts to taste or smell like chlorine again
  • Water flow slows down noticeably
  • Ice cubes look cloudy or taste off
  • You cannot remember the last time you changed it

Tip: write the install date on the filter housing with a permanent marker. Have a question about your filter? Contact us or call 888-672-3458.
