The vital importance of water for good health

The human body is made up of roughly 70% water.  Water is the primary nutrient transporter, and water is involved in or responsible for just about every bodily process.  Many common health problems— including headaches, bladder/kidney disorders, constipation, hot flashes, heartburn, even muscle pain, arthritis and age-related complaints—can be alleviated through proper hydration.

Water is essential for proper breathing, digestion, elimination, circulation, absorption, and more.   Without water the human body can survive only three-five days, whereas the body can survive without food for thirty-forty days!

So, understanding just how critical water is to your health and well-being, it makes sense to be drinking the best quality water possible. Point of use water filtration is a very good choice for you and your family.

Toxic Drinking Water Becoming More Common Around the U.S.

Each year, red flags over toxic drinking water are raised across the nation, with reasons varying from location to location. As reported by The Atlantic,8 aging water pipes have become an increasingly common source of toxic exposure. While the article describes the situation in Flint, Michigan, many other areas around the US struggle with similar problems:

“… [A]bnormally high levels of e. coli, trihalomethanes, lead, and copper have been found in the city’s water, which comes from the local river (a dead body and an abandoned car were also found in the same river) … [R]esidents say that the city government endangered their health when it stopped buying water from Detroit last year and instead started selling residents treated water from the Flint River …”

In December 2015, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder apologized for the state’s mishandling of the situation in Flint, and Dan Wynant, head of the state Department of Environmental Quality, resigned. The state has now allocated $10 million to water testing and distribution of water filters.

Many Chemicals Found in Municipal Water Are Unregulated

Clean, pure water is essential for health, and I strongly encourage you to filter the water you use both for drinking and bathing.

In fact, immersing yourself in contaminated water may be even more hazardous to your health than drinking it, as the chemicals absorbed through your skin go directly into your blood stream, bypassing your digestive and internal filtration systems.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates tap water in the U.S., but while there are legal limits on many of the contaminants permitted in municipal water supplies, more than half of the 300+ chemicals detected in U.S. drinking water are not regulated at all.

According to Paul Pestano, a research analyst with the Environmental Working Group (EWG), some of the legal limits may also be too lenient for safety.

For several years, the EWG has argued that the federal government needs to perform a nationwide assessment of drinking water quality, and invest more to protect against water pollution in the first place.

Why Filtering Your Water Is a Necessity

If you care about your health, filtering your household water is more a necessity than an option these days. Water pollution has become a very significant problem that simply cannot be ignored any longer.

It doesn’t matter where you live, as many of the most dangerous chemicals find their way into the ecosystem and food chain, spreading from one continent to another, as described in a recent article by Prevent Disease.

Fish and other wildlife are demonstrating the ramifications of out of control water pollution, and there’s cause to believe chemical pollution may be affecting human health as well, even if the effects are not always as directly traceable.

The sources of pollution are many, ranging from agricultural runoff and industrial releases, outworn pipes, firefighting foam and pharmaceutical drugs, and even the chemicals used during water treatment themselves.

Benefits of Drinking Filtered Water

Filtering water before consumption has significant benefits, from protecting your health to making tap water taste much better At Pelican Water, we offer a range of water filtration systems to meet your needs, including economical and compact countertop filters, reverse osmosis and whole house filtration systems. Read on to find the five most important benefits of filtering water.

Water treatment facilities use a mix of chemicals to kill microorganisms, including chlorine and chloramine. While these are effective disinfectants for large-scale water treatment, they should be filtered out of your drinking water. In addition, there are a number of other contaminants and chemicals showing up in water supplies at an increasing and alarming rate.

A carbon filter removes chemicals before they enter your home plumbing, preventing exposure to substances that could harm you and your family.

Health Hazard from Chlorine in Drinking Water

Did you know that almost 1 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water in developing parts of the world in Africa, Latin America and Asia? Most often, the water available to them is not clean and carries many pathogens, minerals and heavy metals. The rest of us who are fortunate enough in developed countries have access to water which chlorine is used to eliminate bacteria from the municipal drinking water supplies, making tap water safe for everyday consumption. But, scientists are warning that prolonged drinking of chlorinated water can have serious impact on our health.

Why chlorine?

For almost 100 years, chlorine has been used to eliminate harmful bacteria from drinking water. Chlorine kills most disease-carrying bacteria, parasites and other organisms. It also removes from the water manganese, soluble iron and hydrogen sulfide. Bacteria commonly found in contaminated water can cause dysentery, typhoid fever, infectious hepatitis and many other diseases. Chlorine is easy to introduce, it is cheap and effective. It cleans not only water, but water pipes and reservoirs. But, it might be doing more damage to our health than good.

Unfortunately, chlorine is by far the cheapest solution for large scale water purification available today. While there are other safer and more effective chemicals, only chlorine is economically viable. It does not mean that we have to sit and wait for the governments to come up with a better and affordable solution for the elimination of bacteria in our drinking water. There is a range of water filters available for domestic, small scale use. Some people prefer to attach water filter at the point where it enters the house. Others attach small water filters at the each tap and shower. Filters containing activated carbon or charcoal are very effective in eliminating chlorine from the water.

How to remove Chlorine from drinking water

Why you should remove chlorine from your water

Many household now use water purifying systems to filter their tap water before use. Why is this necessary? It’s become a popular addition to many homes because of the concern about chlorinated water and the possible negative effects it can have on health. While chlorinated water is nothing new; it is common in many parts of the world, the need to remove chlorine particles or residue from drinking water and water used for cleaning our bodies has now been firmly established as being beneficial in the long term.

How to remove chlorine from your water

It is not only drinking water that poses a health risk. Chlorinated water can produce skin allergies and deposit toxins on skin during showering or bathing.

Installing a specialized water filter onto the showerhead or tap used in the bathroom can help remove chlorine from water used for bathing and showering. While chlorinated water has been successful in eliminating certain historic health risks, there is no doubt that it is beneficial to remove chlorine from daily drinking water and water used for baths and showers to avoid any long term negative health problems associated with chlorine content in water.

Use filtered water for preparation of food

OTO (Orthotolidine) Test
OTO is a solution that turns yellow when added to chlorinated water. The darker it turns, the more chlorine is present in the water. If the chlorine level is excessively high, then the solution will turn brown. One benefit of an OTO test is that it does not bleach out in the presence of high levels of chlorine.

We did a test where a vial is filled to a level with tap water. Four drops of the OTO solution is added and the water in vial turns yellow. Some uncooked raw rice is added into the yellow solution and is stirred for a few seconds. Then the yellow solution becomes clear again, it was no longer yellow. This shows that the chlorine is being absorbed by the rice. It is therefore better to use filtered water in preparation of food. (I lost the pictures we have taken though)

Did you know that water could contain radon? In recognition of National Radon Action Month, let’s take a look at the issue of radon in water. Here are the answers to 12 important questions on this topic answered.

As radon testing providers for over 25 years, we have received many questions about the effects of radon in water.

The top 12 questions and answers are listed below.

Q: Should everyone test their water for radon?
A: While radon gets into some homes through the water, it is important to first test the air in the home for radon. If a high level is found during the air test, and the home has a private well, it is recommended that you test the well water for radon.

Q: How do you test for radon in water?
A: Testing water for radon is straightforward and should be performed by a trained radon technician. First, a sample must be carefully drawn from the well. This is normally done by selecting a water faucet as close to the well head as possible. It is important that the water collected in the sample is from the well and not water that has been sitting in the plumbing. The sample is then shipped to a lab that specializes in radon in water analysis.

Granulated Activated Carbon Filter Installation Underway at Flint’s Water Treatment Plant

Installation of the Granulated Carbon filter media (GAC) is underway at Flint’s Water Treatment Plant. The first phase of the new filter media will be installed and operational within a couple of weeks. The GAC filter media will immediately begin greatly reducing the amount of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) in the water which is expected to significantly reduce the formation of total trihalomethanes (TTHM).

The City of Flint and LAN Engineering designed the plan for installing the GAC and work was coordinated with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. Installation of the GAC was a key recommendation by water service firm Veolia North America for addressing the issue of TTHM. The cost of the filters is approximately $1.6 million.

Recent testing has shown that Flint’s water is meeting all regulatory safety standards, with TTHM levels being significantly below the maximum level accepted. Flint has been under the that level at all eight sampling sites during the last two quarters of testing, however a violation notice was required to be sent at the beginning of this month due to the average being high at one site from levels experienced in 2014.
